The Coaching Conversation That Started Practice Business Insights

“Where are my patients going?” It's a simple question. One that started an unexpected journey.

It's a simple question.

One that started an unexpected journey.

Several years ago, I was coaching the owner of a growing nutrition practice. On paper, everything looked promising. Every month, she was welcoming nearly 100 new patients into her practice.

Yet something didn't add up.

Despite all those new patients, her overall practice wasn't growing the way she expected.

During one of our coaching sessions, she asked me a question I'll never forget.

“Where are my patients going?”

Then she asked another.

“How do I know which practitioners are retaining patients best?”

Like many practice owners, she had plenty of data.

What she didn't have was visibility.

So we started with the only thing we had—a Session History report from Practice Better.

I exported the data into Excel and spent a few hours building a simple model that tracked patient retention, practitioner performance, and where patients were quietly dropping off.

It wasn't elegant.

It certainly wasn't software.

But it changed everything.

Instead of guessing, we could finally see.

At the end of one meeting, she looked at me and said,

“Other practice owners could really use this.”

At the time, I smiled and moved on.

I loved coaching.

I wasn't interested in building software.

But that conversation stayed with me.

Eventually, that spreadsheet became Practice Business Insights.

The platform has evolved dramatically.

The mission hasn't.

Today, it still exists to answer the same question that started it all:

What is your data trying to tell you?

Every practice has a story.
